KUALA LUMPUR, 28 November 2012  Sime Darby Property Berhad is the first organisation in Malaysia to receive an ISO 50001: 2011 certification from SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd. The certification covers the energy management system for the operation and maintenance of property assets. Sime Darby Property Berhad is on a successful track of implementing the energy management system to its property assets starting out with Wisma Sime Darby Berhad.

ISO 50001 is the gold standard for energy management systems. It provides Sime Darby Property with a systematic guidance to achieve continual improvement of energy performance encompassing energy efficiency, energy security and energy consumption.

Dato Abd Wahab Maskan, Managing Director of Sime Darby Property Berhad and Group Chief Operating Officer of Sime Darby Berhad, said,  This milestone is an affirmation of our unwavering commitment towards embracing sustainability in every way.

According to Dato Wahab, improving energy efficiency has been identified as one of Sime Darby Property s 14 Sustainability Goals. The company aims to achieve a 20% increase in energy efficiency by 2020.  Towards this end, we adopted an Energy Efficiency Programme that is aligned with the ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System Model. This Programme is aimed at certifying properties managed by our Property Investment arm to the said standard.

 As part of the certification process, we have invested in various energy-efficiency technologies in Wisma Sime Darby. These include installation of variable speed drives at cooling tower fans and condenser water pumps to optimize energy usage. As a result, Wisma Sime Darby successfully achieved energy savings of 13%.

 This success has encouraged us to be steadfast in our effort to continue the certification process for our other properties, he added.

During the certificate presentation ceremony, Pn. Khalidah Mustafa, Managing Director, SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, said,  We are impressed that in less than one year, Sime Darby Property has successfully established and implemented an energy management system in Wisma Sime Darby that is in compliance with the stringent ISO 500001 standard. It is all the more remarkable given the fact that Wisma Sime Darby is more than 20 years old.

 This achievement is testimony to Sime Darby Property s strong commitment to efficient energy management. The company has indeed set a good example for others to follow, she concluded.
