Sime Darby Property Launches
A community project to encourage upcycling and recycling of waste materials among residents.

BANDAR BUKIT RAJA, 12 November 2016 – Sime Darby Property launched the ‘Beyond Bins’ campaign at the Bandar Bukit Raja township in Klang today, a collaboration with social enterprise partner Biji-biji Initiative.

Themed “Common Waste Materials”, the Beyond Bins campaign was co-officiated by Sime Darby Property Chief Operating Officer YBhg Dato’ Wan Hashimi Albakri and Klang Municipal Council’s Environmental Services Department Head of Operations Mr. Woo Lee Tay, joined by residents from 21 resident associations across the Bandar Bukit Raja township.

The Beyond Bins campaign is a six-month long campaign which is set to create a more sustainable  community by promoting recycling and upcycling of waste among residents through hands-on upcycling workshops, a  recycling competition and public art installations made from discarded materials.

Sime Darby Property Chief Operating Officer, Dato’ Wan Hashimi Albakri said, “We wholeheartedly embrace our principles in developing sustainable communities and are continuously looking at new and innovative ways to inculcate this within the townships we build and the communities we foster. The Beyond Bins campaign is the first of its kind to be carried out in Bandar Bukit Raja and the ultimate aim is to inspire similar initiatives to be held across the rest of our 22 active townships in the future for the benefit of our developments and communities or even for other developers to follow suit in addressing the issue of waste management.

“Sustainability to us is about contributing to a better society, minimising our impact on the environment and delivering sustainable development. We hope to share this long term aspiration with our communities, for us to enjoy a better future together.”

Throughout the campaign, Bandar Bukit Raja residents are encouraged to separate their waste via bins placed at the entrance of 21 residential areas within the township. At the end of every month, the residential areas with the highest amount of recyclables collected will be rewarded, with the overall winners announced at the end of the six-month period.

Biji-biji Initative Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder, Rashvin Pal Singh said, “Beyond Bins aims to be a self-sustaining recycling project, where the recyclables collected pays for collection related services such as logistics and labour. The income generated from sales of recyclables collected at each residential area is shared with recyclables collection vendor, UrbanR and the respective residential association. Thirty percent of income generated goes to UrbanR for management fee and 70% goes to Residential Associations for their use.”

The hands-on upcycling workshops comprise four workshops per weekend (two sessions per day), catering to 120 participants per month. Among the fun-filled workshops organised include ‘The Pallet Box’, where participants will learn basic woodworking skills, ‘Detergent Bottle Lamp’, turning empty detergent bottles into stylish lamps and ‘Aromatherapy Candle Holders’, turning empty cans into beautifully designed aromatherapy candle holders.

After the upcycling workshop, participants will proceed to build a public art installation using skills they learned during the workshop.

In line with Sime Darby Property’s aim to reduce solid waste in all its townships and business units, the company is progressively delivering its promises by embedding sustainability into its business practices, corporate culture and through a range of focused sustainability initiatives to reach out to its communities.
