YB Datuk Seri Ir. Dr Wee Ka Siong, Minister of Transport of Malaysia, visits the 42-acre redevelopment project and newly opened Zone 1 Underground station

YB Datuk Seri Ir. Dr Wee Ka Siong, Minister of Transport of Malaysia visited Battersea Power Station (BPS) in central London, UK, on Friday 15th October to witness the transformation of this Malaysia-owned regeneration project into a new, vibrant neighbourhood with a fully integrated public transport network.

The Minister of Transport of Malaysia was welcomed by Dato’ Jagan Sabapathy, Chairman of Battersea Project Holding Company (BPHC), Simon Murphy, Chief Executive Officer of Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) and Marina Chung, Chief Design Review Officer at BPSDC. Richard Graham MP, UK Trade Envoy to Malaysia, also joined the visit.

YB Datuk Seri Ir. Dr Wee Ka Siong travelled on the newly-opened extension to the Northern Line and arrived at the development via the brand-new Zone 1 Battersea Power Station Underground station, which received £300 million in developer contributions from the Battersea Power Station project and opened last month. As well as receiving an update on the wider development, YB Datuk Seri Ir. Dr Wee Ka Siong and his guests were given a tour of the Grade II* listed Power Station, which is set to open to the public next year.

Along with restoring the iconic Power Station and surrounding area, the investment by the Malaysian shareholders, Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and EPF, has been instrumental in providing much needed new public transport infrastructure that will benefit the wider community, residents, local businesses, and the tens of millions of visitors expected once the Power Station opens its doors.

The enhanced transport links, which consist of a new Tube station, river bus service, buses and bikes, have not only unlocked accessibility for this part of London but also enabled socio-economic improvement opportunities for the community. The development’s well-integrated transport network has also played a key role in attracting renown global brands and companies to open new shops and set up their London offices at BPS.

YB Datuk Seri Ir. Dr Wee Ka Siong, Malaysia Minister of Transport, said:

The Battersea Power Station project is a shining example of our local companies’ ability to create and add value to places outside of Malaysia, even bringing regeneration back to zones that had been left unused for decades, while also being a valuable investment. As part of our tour, we were shown the project’s impressive integration into public transport networks which we should look to emulate back home to help enhance accessibility and value for our key stakeholders.”

The Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy, Richard Graham MP, said:

“There has been a lot of progress since my last visit at this iconic giant regeneration project - inside the old power station itself, new housing and restaurants, the river bus and, critically, the opening of the new underground station. It’s been a long journey for the Malaysian investors and the Battersea Power Station team, but there’s now masses of light in the tunnel and we can all see this will be Europe’s most exciting new urban destination. “A big opening in Jubilee Year 2022 will be a great moment for the UK and Malaysia to celebrate together. My hope now is that we can create similarly successful partnerships for projects in Malaysia.”

The opening of the Zone 1 Battersea Power Station Underground station was a significant milestone for the project, with journey times to the West End and the City now taking approximately 15 minutes, as well as boosting the local economy and creating over 17,000 jobs. BPS also has its own river bus pier, with services operated by Uber Boat by Thames Clippers and a Transport for London (TfL) cycle hire stand, where visitors can rent Santander bikes.

Battersea Power Station will be one of the most exciting retail and leisure destinations in London. The restored and repurposed Power Station will include over 100 shops, bars and restaurants, 254 apartments as well as unique events and leisure spaces, including the Chimney Lift Experience, which will be operated by global events and entertainment leader, IMG., There will also be a new six-acre riverfront park that is open to the public. Residents began moving into their new homes inside the historic Power Station building earlier this year.

The first completed chapter in the regeneration of Battersea Power Station, Circus West Village, is a thriving neighbourhood with over 1,500 residents calling it home and a mix of vibrant restaurants, cafés, fitness and leisure facilities, theatre and cinema, which attract over three million visitors a year. Significant progress is also being made on Electric Boulevard, the third phase of the project which comprises buildings by Gehry Partners and Foster + Partners, forming their first-ever collaboration.

BPS is a strategic investment owned and being developed by a Malaysian consortium consisting of Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and EPF. The commercial assets within the Power Station building are directly owned by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and EPF.
